Academy Councils

Making a Difference in Our Schools and Communities

The Academy Council plays an important role in providing local oversight, support, and community connection for our schools. As a sub-committee of the Trust Board, it focuses on Personal Development, Stakeholder Voice, and Community Engagement, ensuring that schools remain closely connected to the communities they serve.

Acting as the Trust’s local “eyes and ears”, Academy Councils provide valuable insight and feedback, helping to ensure that decisions made across the Trust have a positive and meaningful impact at school level. Through close collaboration with school leaders and the Trust, Academy Councillors help strengthen community relationships, champion local perspectives, and support our shared commitment to delivering ambition, equity, and opportunity for all.

Academy Councillors bring a wide range of professional expertise, knowledge, and lived experience, offering both support and constructive challenge while helping schools remain responsive to the needs of their communities.

The Role of an Academy Councillor

Academy Councillors play a vital role in supporting school improvement and community engagement. They:

  • Support school leaders to drive continual improvement.
  • Act as ambassadors for the school and Trust within the local community.
  • Bring local knowledge and stakeholder perspectives into discussions.
  • Promote the vision, values, and strategic priorities of the Trust.

Academy Councillors do not become involved in the day-to-day management of schools. Instead, they provide strategic support, constructive challenge, and a valuable link between the school, the Trust, and the wider community.

Expectations of the Role

Academy Councillors can typically expect to:

  • Attend Academy Council meetings throughout the year.
  • Read meeting papers and reports in advance of meetings.
  • Participate in occasional school visits, events, and training sessions.
  • Engage with school and Trust activities where appropriate.
The Impact You Can Make

Academy Councillors help to ensure that:

  • Pupils receive the best possible educational experience.
  • Schools remain connected to their communities.
  • School leaders are supported and constructively challenged.
  • The voices of parents, staff, and local stakeholders are heard.
  • Schools continue to improve, develop, and thrive.

The contribution of Academy Councillors makes a lasting difference to both individual schools and the wider Trust community.
